Honours Information for Grade 7 Parents
In the past, we have offered a Math 8/9 Honours class in which enrolled Grade 8 students would cover both the Math 8 and the Math 9 curriculum allowing them to take Math 10 in their grade 9 year. With the new curriculum implementation, we have found that the two courses are too disjointed to cover both the 8 and 9 learning outcomes in one semester. For the 2017/2018 school year, all Grade 7 students will take Math 8. Those students who show interest, skill, mastery, creativity and innovation will be given opportunities for enrichment and to be challenged within Math 8.
The following year, those students will be offered the option of taking Math 9 Honours. The criteria used to determine the successful applicants for the Math 9 Honours class are based on Math 8 teacher’s recommendation, Math 8 marks, and preferably the Gauss contest results (in which students will be encouraged to participate) Honours students in Math 9 will be considered Pre-AP (Advanced Placement).
The ultimate goal of our Honours program will be to enhance and extend topics within the curriculum, to challenge and motivate students, and provide the necessary skills to advance to AP Calculus in their Grade 12 year. If your child is interested in Math Honours and you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Gordon at firstname.lastname@example.org.
